MEMBERSHIP
1
Full Members shall be private individuals of good repute residing in the
UK. The rights of every member shall be personal to themself and not
transferable by their own act or by operation of law.
2
Classes of Members
2.1
Full Members shall be those members who:
a) hold
a university degree in a subject other than translation / interpreting (studies)
or equivalent and have at least two years of verifiable full time (four
years part time) experience as practitioners or a verifiable 100,000
words of translation output or 100 hours of interpreting.
or
b) hold
an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in translation / interpreting (studies)
with a practical component and at least one year of verifiable full time
(two years part time) experience as practitioners or a verifiable
100,000 words of translation output or 100 hours of interpreting.
or
c) are
members of other recognised professional bodies (such as IoL or ITI) and
have at least one year of verifiable full time (two years part time)
experience as practitioners or a verifiable 100,000 words of translation
output or 100 hours of interpreting subsequent to the date of their
admittance to such a body.
or
d) have
three years of professional experience as translation / interpreting
educators and at least two years of verifiable full time (four years
part time) experience as practitioners or a verifiable 100,000 words of
translation output or 100 hours of interpreting.
or
e) have
passed a special examination in translation and/or interpreting set by
the Association.
or
d) can,
exceptionally, satisfy six sevenths of the Council members of their
abilities as professional translators and/or interpreters.
2.2
Fellows shall be those members who not only fulfil the requirements
for Members but who, by reason of their outstanding translating or
interpreting ability as evidenced by gaining distinction in the
professional examinations stipulated by the Association or on the basis
of the work they have done, are deemed to be outstanding Professional
Practitioners.
2.3
Honorary Members shall be distinguished individuals who will be able
to help the profession.
INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERS
Institutions providing translation courses or translation services can
become institutional members of the Association.
ASSOCIATES
Associates shall be those non UK residents who fulfil the remaining
requirements for full Membership stated above.
SUPPORTING MEMBERS
Supporting members shall be those persons who have a particular interest
in or contribution to make to the profession, but who are not qualified
to be full Members, or Fellows of the Association.
STUDENT MEMBERS
Under-
or post-graduate students enrolled in British Universities in
translation / interpreting studies programmes can become student members
of the Association.
TITLES
Members
Members
may style themselves as: Member of the Hellenic Association of
Translators and Interpreters. and use the abbreviation MHATI
Fellows
Fellows
may style themselves as Fellow of the Hellenic Association of
Translators and Interpreters and use the abbreviation FHATI
Honorary Members
Honorary Members may style themselves as Honorary Members of the
Hellenic Association of Translators and Interpreters and may use the
abbreviation HonMHATI.
Institutional Members
Institutional
Members may style themselves as Institutional Members of the Hellenic
Association of Translators and Interpreters and use the abbreviation
Institutional MHATI.
Associates
Associates may style themselves as Associates of the Hellenic
Association of Translators and Interpreters and use the abbreviation AHATI
Supporting Members
Supporting Members shall not use any title, style, or abbreviation in
respect to their status with the Association. Furthermore they shall not
use the title Translator or Interpreter, nor shall they describe
themselves as a translator or interpreter.
Students
Student
members shall not use any title, style, or abbreviation in respect to
their student member status with the Association. Furthermore they shall
not use the title Translator or Interpreter, nor shall they describe
themselves as a translator or interpreter.
ADMISSION OF MEMBERS
Admission by Two-Thirds-Majority Council Vote
Persons
or Institutions shall be admitted as Members of the Association only by resolution of
the Council passed by a two thirds majority of Council members present
at a meeting thereof.
Application for Membership
Application for Membership shall be made in writing supported by
evidence of appropriate qualifications and/or experience, satisfactory
to the Council.
Admission of Honorary Members
The
Council may, by a two thirds majority of Council Members present at a
Council meeting, admit as Honorary Members such persons, being persons
who qualify, as it sees fit.
Admission of Institutional Members
The
Council may, by a two thirds majority of Council Members present at a
Council meeting, admit as Institutional Members such Institutions, being
Institutions who qualify, as it sees fit.
Notification of Admission
Every
person or Institution duly elected as a Member shall be informed thereof by letter
without delay. To take up membership, every such person or Institution shall give a
written undertaking to abide by the Constitution and Bylaws of the
Association, and to pay the admission fee and the proportion of the
annual subscription still applicable for the current year within one
month of receiving notice of being elected to the Association, otherwise
the election shall become void, unless the Council extends the time,
which it may do in special circumstances.
Certificate of Membership
Every
person or Institution so elected and so taking up membership shall receive a
certificate of membership.
